SEARCH ENGINE OPTIMISATION – OR ‘SEO’ – INCREASES VISITORS AND SALES
SEO – otherwise known as ‘Search Engine Optimisation’ – is integral to getting your website found by search engines and listed in their ‘organic’ search results. This in turn means your website will be visited by more users and so increases the chance you have to make more sales.
Research shows that ‘organic’ search results (referring to those results that appear in the main area of a search results listing) are scanned first and generally are viewed as being more relevant than ‘paid-for’ results. Appearing in these listings for key terms that are relevant to your business are vital in ensuring a steady flow of visitors to your website.
What you need to do to optimise your website
To get good organic search results there are quite a number of SEO tasks that should be taken on some of which I have outlined below. Many of these tasks should be done BEFORE the development of a new website, but they can be retro-fitted into a website: –
- Keyword (and competitor) research.
- Site Architecture and content development.
- Understanding keyword use and density.
- Clean website code including use of accessibility guidelines.
- Well optimised code, images & other media.
- Fast server response and page download times.
- Regular content generation based on a clear marketing plan.
- Natural link building generated from great content.
What do you need to know about Search Engine Optimisation?
There is a lot of information about how to successfully develop a well optimised website for search engines – so much so that it can become confusing. As such I have listed the five most important things you NEED to know about Search Engine Optimisation here: –
- Ensure your website is coded using clean, compliant and accessible code.
This will help to make the site work across different Browsers and Operating Systems but importantly (and increasingly importantly) it will help with the speed of your site. - Ensure your website is optimised for each page – not the whole website.
SEO should be worked on a per page basis, not across a whole website – DO NOT use the same endless lists of keywords across the whole website. - Use each page’s title and description to sell your website to the user.
Google does not index (keep a record of) keywords and phrases, it does however index the title and description and displays these prominently in the search results. - Update your website regularly.
Daily is best. Weekly is okay. Monthly as a minimum. If you don’t update regularly don’t expect to rank well. - Let other relevant websites know about your website.
Don’t be scared to shout about your site across the internet. A few well-placed articles, social media posts and forum discussions with links to your site are worth a lot more than you might think.
A friendly warning
Be wary of approaches by ‘Black Hat’ SEO agents who promise to get you to the top of Google for a given keyword. This is extremely tempting however the penalties imposed by Google, if you are caught, can mean the end of that web site ever ranking well with Google.
